LICENCE CLASSES The class of licence you need depends on what type of vehicle you wish to drive. All states and territories in Australia have the same licence classes.

GETTING YOUR LICENCE The Graduated Licensing Scheme helps new drivers gain experience and become safer drivers by spreading the learning process over 4 years.

DRIVER KNOWLEDGE TEST The Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) is the first stage in the licensing process. You must pass the DKT to get your learner licence.

PRACTICE DRIVER KNOWLEDGE TEST Once you’ve studied for the test, you can take the free online practice DKT. It is designed to help you become familiar with the test, and decide if you’re ready to attempt the test for real.

HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is part of the licensing process. To progress from a learner driver licence to a P1 licence, you need to first pass the HPT, then pass the driving test.

THE DRIVING TEST The driving test is part of the licensing process. To progress from a learner licence to a provisional P1 licence, you must first pass the Hazard Perception Test before you can attempt the driving test.

LEARNER LICENCE To get your driver learner licence, you need to be 16 or older. You will need to attend a Service NSW centre to prove your identity and pass a Driver Knowledge Test (DKT).

PROVISIONAL P1 LICENCE If you’re 17 or older, and meet all the requirements, you can apply for a provisional P1 licence.

PROVISIONAL P2 LICENCE Once you’ve held your provisional P1 licence for at least 12 months, you can apply for a provisional P2 licence.

FULL LICENCE After you’ve held your provisional P2 licence for at least 24 months you can progress to a full (unrestricted) driver licence.
